Peer learning is important in student success. Peer learning offers a collaborative environment. When students work together they often gain a better understanding of the material being learned. I find it works in two ways. Students may need to hear a topic more than once to gain an understanding. Sometimes hearing it from a peer may be provide an explanation that can be better understood. Students also reinforce their understanding by explaining a topic to someone else.
Diversity
Peer learning provides an opportunity for diversity. Students can share their experiences and backgrounds. This will deepen their collaboration. It breaks down barriers and creates social learning.
Communication and Critical Thinking
Peer learning helps to improve student communication. Even at the higher education level, students dislike talking in front of the class. By providing the opportunity for peer learning, it will allow for students to talk among themselves. It increases their confidence for speaking in groups. It offers a safe learning environment. Peer learning also encourages critical thinking skills. When working in groups, students must apply critical thinking skills when working on their contribution to the group.
